If you grew up scrubbing your face with St. Ive’s Apricot Face Scrub or using those glitter art sticks from Limited Too then this post is for you. Here is the skincare routine you need if you’re over the age of 30.
Lately I’ve been noticing a few more lines and changes to my skin as I get older. Long gone are the days when I would just scrub my face with witch hazel or some apricot face scrub or (gasp) go to bed without washing my face at all. Over the past year I’ve been investing in a good skincare regimen to help get a glowing complexion. Now it’s become a perfected routine and honestly my skin has never looked better.
Truly, there’s so many skincare products out there from serums, moisturizers, BHA, AHA, hyaluronic acid, retinol, it can be overwhelming. I’m breaking it down below so if you are over the age of 30 and looking to get your best skin, keep scrolling.

How your skin changes as you age
As we get older, our hormones change and our collagen production starts to decrease. As a result, our skin begins to lose it’s elasticity and it becomes more dry and dull. Not to mention those fine lines start to creep in. Add in stress from adulthood and by now in your 30’s, those late nights and signs of UV damage may now be visible.
Why get a good skincare routine
It’s never too late to start getting into the habit of a good skincare routine. However, once the damage is done, it’s difficult to reverse. So the earlier you start taking care of your skin, and preventing any damage, the better! Plus, your face is the first thing people notice about you. Not only does having glowing, healthy skin look better but it will make you feel more confident!
Here are 7 must haves in your skincare arsenal
1.) Cleanser –
2.) Moisturizer –
3.) Spf –
4.) Exfoliate –
5.) Eye cream –
6.) Antioxidant serum –
7.) Retinoid – make sure you have a specific one for the eye area
Morning
In the morning I start by rubbing an ice cube all over my face, especially my under eye area. This helps reduce any swelling and perks me up! I wash my face with a gentle cleanser, pat dry and them immediately after washing my face I apply a Hyaluronic acid serum. Hyaluronic acid helps to plump up skin and lock in moisture but it works best when layered with a moisturizer on top so that is key!
Next I apply a niacinamide serum or antioxidant serum. Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B and helps to reduce redness, hyperpigmentation, tightens pores, controls oily skin and helps fight acne, as well as helps with fine lines.
In the morning I love to give my undereye area a little extra TLC with a specially formulated eye cream. My favorite is Zo Growth Factor Eye Serum.
Since you want to layer heaviest to lightest, do your serums first then apply a lighter moisturizer. My favorite is the viral Snail Mucin cream. It’s nourishing, plumping, hydrating and will give you a nice glow.
Don’t forget your SPF! This is essential all year to help combat UV rays and aging. Supergoop or Tula spf
Evening
After cleansing, I make sure to exfoliate 3 times a week. I personally don’t like to exfoliate more than that just because I find it’s too harsh on my skin. You can do a physical exfoliate like a sugar scrub or a chemical exfoliate that contains alpha hydroxy acids which I think works best. Either way, exfoliating removes any dead or dry skin brightening your complexion as well as leaving a smooth surface to absorb all your skin care products. (I commonly switch back and forth between the Paula’s choice liquid exfoliant and these Dr Dennis Gross peel pads).
Once a week after exfoliating, microneedle at home! Microneedling is a process that involves making tiny pricks into the skin with little needles. This is an easy way to stimulate collagen production to tone and firm skin. But it also allows your serums and moisturizers to penetrate deeper. You can get a real microneedling session at an aesthetics place however I use this microneedle roller to kind of do the same thing at home.
At night, I apply Hyaluronic Acid, followed by retinol serum, and a retinol eye cream. I then top with the snail mucin moisturizer.
I go to bed looking like a glazed donut and there’s no better feeling 🙂

Now go get your best skin!

February 27, 2024 at 9:24 amI am so lazy with my skincare and don’t do more than just washing my face in the shower. Eventually that is going to catch up with me (I am about to turn 49).

February 28, 2024 at 10:40 amAs a fellow former St. Ives addict, I loved all of this! Taking care of my skin in my 30s and now 40s (eek!) had its learning curve, but it’s truly made the difference in looking and feeling confident in this skin as I’ve gotten older. Keep up your glazed donut routine – your skin looks beautiful and healthy!
