Tips for teaching your kids about fire safety

Talking to your kids about fire safety

Thank you First Alert for sponsoring this post. Don’t wait replace!

Teaching your kids about fire safety is an important topic. Did you know smoke alarms don’t last forever? Alarms should be replaced at least every 10 years! Recently we updated our smoke and carbon monoxide alarms  in our home and took it as an opportunity to have a discussion with the kids about what to do in the event there was a fire. We replaced all of our alarms  with First Alert 10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms. Not only do they protect your home in the event of a fire or carbon monoxide emergency, but they also eliminate the need for battery replacements and late-night low battery chirps for a decade.

Talking to your kids about fire safety

Here are some of our take away tips for talking to your kids about fire safety:

1.)    Keep it simple – we didn’t want to overwhelm them or make them fearful. We kept things very basic yet factual.

2.)   Talk about smoke alarms – showing kids what a smoke alarm looks like and explaining its function is the perfect place to start. We kept it very simple and also let them listen to what the alarm sounded like so that they would become familiar with it in the event the alarm went off.

3.)   Make a plan – Next, we talked to the kids about what they should do in the event the smoke alarms went off. Make an escape plan and make sure that everyone knows how to get out of each room. It may also be helpful to have a designated meeting place outside, a safe distance from the house,  and be sure the kids know to wait for each other there.

4.)   Make it fun – if you want to keep children’s attention, you have to make it fun. We played a game of Simon Says and included teaching them how to “Stop, Drop & Roll”.

Fire safety is an extremely important topic. Talking about it with your family and practicing regularly ensures that your family is prepared in the event of an emergency.
